Objectives
  1. To promote the arts and arts education through the identification and establishment of linkages
    between the arts and our daily lives (buses).
  2.  To engage the community through their participation and interaction in arts activities, workshops
    and performances organized by HKIEd’s Department of Cultural and Creative Arts.
  3.  To raise public awareness and interest in the “Arts and Culture” by making it more accessible to
    the general public through interactive educational activities.


Methods Used
Engages the corporate social responsibility targets of a commercial partner and collaborates with other like-minded organizations who provide different kinds of support including:
  • Event venue
  • Exhibition venue
  • Prize sponsorship
  • Promotion and media space
Collaborates with professional arts groups for the promotion of the arts and culture as well as to enhance CCA students’ knowledge and skills across various art forms.
Summary of Findings
  • Given the appropriate opportunities, the Hong Kong public welcome community-based arts projects that provide them with opportunities to experience different art forms as well as increase their arts knowledge.
  •  Developed a community-development approach that connects six different sectors of the community – higher education, schools, commercial, NGOs, artists, and media.
Impact
  • The project blends into the curriculum of selected courses and provides CCA students with internship opportunities and outside-classroom learning experiences.
  •  CCA students gain valuable experiences in event management, design, performance and teaching, marketing and promotion, thereby enhancing their professional and life skills development, knowledge acquisition, as well as broadening their worldview during their programme of study.
  •  Serves as a platform for research into the arts in Hong Kong, their role and significance in the community, the needs of HK arts, and their implications for policy-makers.

  • Refereed paper – Community Engagement Through the Arts, International Journal of Social, Political, and Community Agendas in the Arts (Common Ground Publisher)
  •  Selected for presentation at UNESCO-APEID International Conference (Bangkok, December 2011) and International Conference on Arts in Society (Liverpool, July 2012).
  •  Another article to be submitted to international refereed journal by May/June 2013.
Biography of Principal Investigator

Dr. Leung Bo Wah is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts. He received his Ph.D. in music education from the University of New South Wales, Australia. Dr. Leung’s research interest includes creativity in music, motivation in learning music and composing, transformative learning, and teaching Cantonese Opera in the classroom. He is currently Programme Coordinator of MA (Music Education), Chair of Departmental Research and Development Committee, and one of the founding Co-editors of the Asia-Pacific Journal for Arts Education. He is on the editorial boards of 3 international refereed journals of music education and an Adjunct Professor of the School of Music at the Northeast Normal University of China. Dr. Leung serves as a Board Member (2004–2006; 2010–2012) of the International Society for Music Education (ISME), the Chair of the Music in School and Teacher Education Commission (2006–2008), and a Commissioner of the Research Commission (2010–2016) under ISME. At present, he is Vice President of the Hong Kong Association for Music Educators, and a subject specialist (Education; Performing Arts) for the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications.
